Matthew 5
1 But when he saw the crowds, he went up into the mountain; and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and began to teach them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit; because theirs is the kingdom of the heavens. 4 Blessed are those who mourn; because they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the gentle; because they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; because they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful; because they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart; because they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers; because they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake; because theirs is the kingdom of the heavens. 11 Blessed are all of you, whenever people condemn and persecute you, and say every bad word against you, falsely, on my account. 12 Rejoice and be extremely glad, because your reward is great in the heavens; for just so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 You are the salt of the earth: but if salt should lose its flavour, with what will it be salted? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown away, and trampled underfoot by others. 14 You are the light of the world: a city cannot be hidden that stands upon a mountain; 15 nor do people light a lamp and place it under a basket, but on a lamp-stand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 So let your light shine before others that they may see your good works, and glorify your father who is in the heavens.
17 Do not suppose that I have come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I have not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For truly I say to you, until the passing away of heaven and earth, not one letter, or one stroke of a letter, will ever pass away from the law, until all has come to be. 19 Whoever, therefore, breaks a single one of these commandments, even the least, and teaches others to do the same, he will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whoever practises and teaches them, that person will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens. 20 For I say to you, that if your righteousness does not exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of the heavens.
21 You have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not murder; and whoever does murder, shall be liable to judgement. 22 But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother rashly, shall be liable to judgement; and whoever says to his brother, Rhaká, shall be liable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, Fool, shall be liable to the Gehenna of fire. 23 If, therefore, any of you are presenting your gift on the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there, in front the altar, and go away, first be reconciled to your brother, and only then come and present your gift. 25 Be charitable towards your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him; otherwise, you may someday be delivered by your adversary to the judge, and the judge may deliver you to the officer, and you will be cast into prison. 26 Truly I say to you, you will never leave that place, until you have repaid the very last kodrántes.
27 You have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman in order to covet her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 And if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of your members, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of your members, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. 31 But it was said, that whoever dismisses his wife, let him give her a written notice of divorce. 32 But I say to you, that whoever dismisses his wife, except for reason of unfaithfulness, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a wife who has dismissed herself, commits adultery.
33 Again you have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not break an oath, but shall repay to the Lord your oaths. 34 But I say to you, do not swear an oath at all: neither by heaven, because it is the throne of God; 35 nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. 36 Neither should you swear by your head, because not a single hair of it can you make white or black. 37 But let your language be, ‘yes, yes’; ‘no, no’; whatever is more than that, proceeds from evil.
38 You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I say to you, do not resist a malicious person: but whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if any one intends to sue you and take your tunic, surrender to him your cloak also; 41 and whoever will press you into service for a mile, go with him for two. 42 Give to the person who asks of you; and the one who wishes to borrow from you, do not turn away.
43 You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy. 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, speak well of those who curse you, benefit those who hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you, 45 so that you may become children of your father who is in heavens; because he causes his sun to rise on the bad and on the good, and rains on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47 And if you embrace your brothers only, what are you doing that is really exceptional? Do not even the tax-collectors do similarly? 48 You shall therefore be perfect, just as your father in the heavens is perfect.
Matthew 6
1 Take care that your charity is not done before others, in order to be seen by them; otherwise, you have no reward with your father who is in the heavens. 2 When any of you, therefore, act charitably, do not sound a trumpet before you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues, and on the streets, so they may be praised by others; truly I say to you all, they have their reward. 3 But when any of you act charitably, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your charity may be in secret; and your father, who sees in secret, will himself repay you in the open.
5 And when you pray, you will not be just like the hypocrites, because they love in the synagogues and on the street-corners to stand and pray, in order to be seen by others; truly I say to you all, that they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go to your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your father who is in secret; and your father, who sees in secret, will repay you in the open. 7 And when all of you pray, do not repeat the same things over and over, just as the gentiles do; for they imagine that, because they speak much, they shall be listened to. 8 Do not therefore be like them; for your father knows the things you need, before you have asked him for them. 9 In this manner, therefore, you should pray: “Our Father in the heavens, your name be kept holy. 10 Let your kingdom come. Let your will come to pass, as in heaven, so also on the earth. 11 Our needed bread give to us this day. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 13 And do not bring us into trial, but rescue us from evil; because yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, into the ages. Amen.” 14 For if you forgive others for their missteps, your heavenly father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive others for their missteps, neither will your father forgive your missteps.
16 And when you fast, do not become just like the hypocrites, with sullen expressions; for they distort their faces, so that they appear to others to be fasting. Truly I say to you, that they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to others to be fasting, but rather to your father who is in secret; and your father, who sees in secret, will repay you in the open.
19 Do not treasure up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust corrupts, and where thieves dig through and steal; 20 but treasure up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupts, and where thieves neither dig through nor steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The lamp of the body is the eye: if then your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will cling to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money. 25 For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you are to eat and what you are to drink; nor about your body, what you are to wear. Is not life greater than food, and the body, than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of heaven, because they do not sow nor reap, nor do they gather into barns; and your heavenly father feeds them. Are not you greatly different from them? 27 But who of you, by worrying, can add to his height a single cubit? 28 And about clothing, why are you anxious? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not toil, nor do they spin. 29 But I say to you, that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was dressed like one of these. 30 And if the grass of the field, that exists today, and tomorrow is thrown into a furnace, is so clothed by God, will he not much more clothe you, oh you of little faith? 31 Do not therefore be anxious, saying, What shall we eat, or What shall we drink, or What shall we dress ourselves with? 32 for all these things, the gentiles seek. For your heavenly father knows that you need these things, all of them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added for you. 34 Do not therefore be anxious about tomorrow; for tomorrow will be anxious about itself. Enough for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 7
1 Do not judge, lest you be judged. 2 For with the judgement you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you mete out, it will be measured to you in turn. 3 But why are any of you looking at the speck in your brother’s eye, but the beam in your own eye, you do not consider? 4 Or how will you say to your brother, Let me get the speck out from your eye; and look, the beam in your own eye? 5 You actor, first get the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to get the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 Do not give what is holy to dogs, nor cast your pearls before swine, or they may trample them amidst their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives; and who seeks, finds; and for the one who knocks, it will be opened. 9 Or who is a person among you, that, if his child asks him for bread, will he instead give him a stone? 10 And if he asks for a fish, will he instead give him a serpent? 11 If therefore you, who are in a bad way, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father in the heavens give good things to those who ask him? 12 Whatever, therefore, you wish others to do for you, do likewise for them yourselves also; for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter through the narrow gate: because broad is the gate, and wide is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter through it: 14 because narrow is the gate, and constricted is the way that leads to life, and few are those who find it.
15 But beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruits you will recognise them: do people gather, from thorns, a bunch of grapes; or from thistles, figs? 17 Just so, every good tree produces fine fruits; but the rotten tree produces bad fruits. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruits, nor a rotten tree produce fine fruits. 19 Every tree that does not produce fine fruit is cut down, and cast into fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you will recognise them.
21 Not every one who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of the heavens; but rather he who does the will of my father who is in heavens. 22 Many will say to me, on that day, “Lord, Lord, in your name have we not made prophecies, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name done many miracles?” 23 And then I will answer them, that “I never knew you; go away from me, workers of lawlessness.”
24 Every one, therefore, who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will compare him to a sensible man, who built his house on rock; 25 and the rain poured, and the rivers came, and the winds blew, and they fell against that house; and it did not fall, for it had been founded upon rock. 26 And every one hearing these words of mine, and not doing them, will be compared to a foolish man, who built his house on sand; 27 and the rain poured, and the rivers came, and the winds blew, and they beat against that house, and it fell; and its fall was great.” 28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had concluded these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching; 29 for he was teaching them as one who has authority, and not like the scribes.
